Getting ready for the first day of preschool

Small, simple steps that help a young child, and their parents, feel ready for a happy start at preschool.

The first day of preschool is a big step for a little person, and often for their parents too. A few small routines in the weeks before can turn nervous excitement into a confident start.

Talk about it, cheerfully

Mention preschool now and then in everyday chat: the friends your child will meet, the songs they will sing and the toys they will play with. Keep it light and positive, and answer questions simply and honestly.

Practise the new routine

A week or two before school starts, move bedtime and wake-up time to match the school day. Try a short morning rehearsal: breakfast, getting dressed and leaving the house at the same time each day.

  • Pack the school bag together the night before
  • Let your child choose their water bottle or lunch box
  • Keep mornings calm and unhurried

Keep goodbyes short and warm

A hug, a clear goodbye and a promise of when you will be back works better than slipping away. Children settle faster when they know what to expect, and teachers are used to helping with first-day tears.

Celebrate the small wins

Ask about the day with open questions such as “What made you smile today?” and celebrate every small step, from saying hello to a new friend to trying a new activity.
